I'm sorry to hear it and am grateful he left behind these great insights on the Holmes stories.

I'm looking forward to finishing the Granada series, which I agree with him is the best Holmes adaptation series, and which features the finest Holmes performance thanks to Jeremy Brett.

So sorry to have missed conversing with this author but glad to have read his blog. I'm a new reader but I'm already taken by your refreshing way of cutting through the Victorian bullshit, pardon my language, and unhesitating criticism of Holmes and Watson when they deserve it. They're too often put on pedestals. (And I'm so glad I'm not the only one who noticed Watson's rude way of describing physicality of characters! His description of the man in The Resident Patient borders on horror!)LaraMycrofthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04344605076650822699noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617561529950733163.post-39950549870084730902021-06-03T16:25:27.537-04:002021-06-03T16:25:27.537-04:00What is your take on the, apparently Victorian-hal...What is your take on the, apparently Victorian-hallmark anti-Semitism of the story?LaraMycrofthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04344605076650822699noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617561529950733163.post-63847791812158341002016-02-27T16:33:05.241-05:002016-02-27T16:33:05.241-05:00You ask whether Doyle knew that “Shoscombe Old Pla...You ask whether Doyle knew that “Shoscombe Old Place” was to be the last Sherlock Holmes story. What about his preface to The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, where he actually says “farewell to Sherlock Holmes”? Isn’t that a clear final abandonment of the character?

Still, it’s enjoyable to read your thoughts on Doyle’s previous, unsuccessful efforts to leave Holmes behind. The fact that he titled his previous anthology His Last Bow instead of The Somethingorother of Sherlock Holmes looks like Doyle was spelling out to his readers, IN CAPITAL LETTERS, that he was finished with the character. The fact that Holmes was brought back from his literary Valhalla for a second time attests to the fans’ resurrective powers.

I’ve had fun reading your blog. I hope that you will find reasons to continue contributing to it in the not-too-distant future.Rob in L.A.https://www.blogger.com/profile/01471435325321069543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617561529950733163.post-56992778547199599362016-02-21T21:16:19.667-05:002016-02-21T21:16:19.667-05:00And I shall miss your kind words.
There may, even...And I shall miss your kind words.

There may, eventually, be some kind of epilogue, or a very occasional look at other aspects of Holmes.
